The Blues Brothers (1980)

So, despite this being deemed as a classic, I had never seen The Blues Brothers until last Saturday.

Notably, I am a fan of Dan Aykroyd (not only because of his role in the Ghostbusters :’) ) So, with the recommendation from my boyfriend, I decided to give it a go.

I was not expecting however, a film which differed from what I thought it initially would be; full of quirky scenes, unexpected spontaneous dance numbers and goofs which could be compared to that of the comedy Airplane. Firstly, I admittedly was a fan of the music throughout the film with songs delivered by Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles; which brought an element of joy to the film with a jazz/ obvious blues feel.

What I liked about the film was it ability to deliver a plot which (to the oblivious viewer) would surprise them; a scene that I found particularly funny was, when leader of the Nazi party, drove over a small ramp but when the camera panned out, the car was falling hundreds of feet towards the ground. This humility both confused me and made me laugh. It also made me laugh how the two main protagonists (played by Aykroyd and Belushi) managed to keep both their glasses and their hats on for 98% of the film; thus retaining their characters look.

Although at first when Matt (my boyfriend) asked me if I had enjoyed the film, I admittedly gave a vague answer as I was unsure about what I had just witnessed. It almost reminded me of a Tarrantino film due to the extensive and varied storyline.

I would recommend this film to people who enjoy films which include car chases, humour, musical dance numbers and a touch of violence. Overall, thinking back I did enjoy the film and am glad that I watched it because as a film student, I appreciate what the film set out to do and would suggest that any movie fan who wants a fun and interesting movie experience should watch it.
